Q: What is the PINC programme?
A: PINC is a cancer rehabilitation programme for women following all cancer surgery and treatments. The programme was developed in Auckland in 2006 for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Physiotherapist Lou James has now extended the programme she developed to include rehabilitating women following all forms of cancer.
This programme is available throughout New Zealand.
Q: What can I expect from a PINC session?
A: Individual sessions with a PINC Physiotherapist which include a complementary blend of physiotherapy, massage, breathing, stretching, fatigue management and exercise prescription including pilates exercises. Your sessions are tailored to your individual needs on the day. PINC Physiotherapists have experience working with women during chemotherapy, following breast reconstruction and those with lymphoedema.
Q: Who are the certified PINC Physiotherapists in Hawkes Bay?
A: Rachel Ward & Rachel Kyle (CHB)
Q: Why should I do the PINC Programme?
A: The PINC programme is an important part of recovery from cancer surgery and treatments. Benefits reported by breast cancer survivors who have completed the programme include:
improved overall physical ability including arm range of movement and core strength, improved sleep, help with reducing stress levels and recovering from fatigue, regaining self-confidence and achieving a sense of well-being.
Exercise is vital throughout our lives but after a cancer diagnosis it is particularly important for a women's physical and emotional well-being.
Q: How do I qualify for the PINC programme?
A: Anyone who has a cancer diagnosis is eligible for PINC.
No referral is required although we receive referrals from surgeons, nurses, GP's, physicians and the cancer society who know how effective and worthwhile the programme is following surgery and treatment.
The cost for 5 individual sessions with a certified PINC Physiotherapist is $400.
If you have private medical insurance this may have a physiotherapy component that can cover this.
The PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Trust provides support for those women who require funding due to economic hardship.

Q: When is the best time to start PINC?
A: We recommend you attend prior to your cancer treatments or surgery for pre-habilitation. If this is not possible then as early as two weeks post-surgery is encouraged and ensures you get the correct advice and information to help with your recovery. If you have not had surgery then you may start during or after your treatment. Please phone us if you are unsure about when to start.
Q: What if I have had a breast reconstruction?
A: We can assist you and give you the correct advice and specific exercises to help optimise your recovery following reconstruction.
Q: What if I have developed lymphoedema or want to know more about preventing lymphoedema?
Rachel offers lymphoedema services which include education, compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, garment measuring and exercise prescription. She can advise you on best guidelines for prevention for those at risk of developing lymphoedema.
Q: What if I don't have much energy and don't feel like exercising?
A: That's ok. PINC is more than just a programme to encourage you to exercise. We incorporate physiotherapy techniques to help with your overall well-being and we can assist with fatigue management.
We are experienced in treating women during chemotherapy cycles and following radiotherapy. We give you lots of support and advice and gradually introduce exercises as you are able, including a home exercise programme.
Q: Why should I continue to exercise if I have cancer?
A: Cancer research has found that exercise can boost the immune system, limit weight gain from chemotherapy, ease treatment related side effects, and contribute to an improved quality of life.
Q: What if I want to exercise more often. What classes are available for this?
A: Ask us about PINC Next Steps and PaddleOn group sessions

Testimonials provided below about the PINC program with Rachel Ward.
I am so grateful for the PINC programme which has helped me with my recovery from my mastectomy and given me the confidence to get on with my life. Being able to be shown some great exercises to help with my recovery and know that I was doing them properly was reassuring that on was on track to returning to my old self. I would recommend that anyone with breast cancer should undergo the PINC programme as I found it so beneficial. DS
I was diagnosed with breast cancer - I had lymph nodes and one breast removed with immediate reconstruction. I found the PINC programme a highlight in my recovery during cancer treatment and with my issues with lymphoedema and cording.
At this point of my recovery I had a lot of changes happening in my right arm and it was important for my state of mind that I had fast factual answers to my many questions. Rachel was able to respond to my questions and needs in real time with expertise I could count on and trust.
Rachel has set up ongoing exercise programs which are aiding my recovery on a daily basis.
Applying for funding to participate in this course was straight forward, easy and immediate. Rachel and the PINC programme was amazing and I am grateful for her commitment and communication every step of the way. For anyone that finds themselves in my position the PINC programme is life changing and I would recommend it to anyone. I remember driving home from my first one on one with Rachel and I was excited at the progress I had made and the knowledge I had gained and the improvements made.
Thanks to everyone involved in PINC & STEEL programme. WA
